Stamps - GRAND DUCHY OF TUSCANY
In 1851 the Grand Duchy of Tuscany included the territories of Florence, Lucca, Siena, Arezzo, Grosseto, Pisa, Livorno and the island of Elba. The ruler was the Grand Duke Leopold II of Lorraine. April 27, 1859, the Grand Duke left Florence and consequently formed the Provisional Government of Tuscany led by Baron Bettino Ricasoli. In August of 1859 the Constituent Assembly voted for the union to the Kingdom of Italy Vittorio Emanuele II. On 11 and 12 March 1860 it was announced that a plebiscite sanctioned the Unification of Italy.
