Basutoland
Basutoland was the former name of the country now known as Lesotho, a landlocked nation located in Southern Africa, entirely surrounded by South Africa. It became a British protectorate in the late 19th century, primarily due to conflicts between the indigenous Basotho people and European settlers.
In 1966, Basutoland gained independence from British rule and was renamed Lesotho. The country is known for its mountainous terrain, with the majority of its land being over 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) above sea level, making it one of the highest countries in the world.
Lesotho has a rich cultural heritage, with traditional music, dance, and crafts being important aspects of its identity. The economy is largely based on agriculture, livestock, and textile manufacturing, with remittances from Basotho working abroad also playing a significant role.
Despite facing challenges such as poverty and political instability, Lesotho's unique culture and stunning landscapes continue to attract visitors and contribute to its national identity.
